6 DRILLING MISTAKES TO AVOID

Drills are a beneficial and conducive tool for hundreds of different home projects. And the key prior to drilling, is to have the proper planning, techniques, and the right tools in place. If you are an expert in the industry, please leave your drilling mistakes in the comment section below.  If you are a beginner DIY enthusiast, below are 6 drilling mistakes to avoid via Fastener Agencies’ experts:

1, INCORRECT SPEED

Ensure the correct speed, indicated on the drill bit packaging, is used for the size drill bit and application.

2. NO LUBRICANTS

If possible, try and use lubricants to get optimal use out of your drill bit. Consequently, this aids in escalating the drill bits longevity.

3. NO PILOT HOLE

A Pilot hole is useful when you’re making a big hole especially in steel. Use a small drill to make a hole that guides the route for the larger drill bit.

4. NO SAFETY GEAR

Always remember your safety goggles, and ear protection if you are drilling regularly.

5.  INCORRECT SIZE DRILL BIT FOR SHIELD ANCHORS.

The correct size should be:

  • M 6 Shield anchor = 12mm drill bit,
  • M 8 shield anchor = 14mm drill bit,
  • M 10 shield anchor = 16mm drill bit,
  • M 12 shield anchor = 20mm drill bit.

6. AVOID USING THE INCORRECT DRILL BIT WITH BUILDING MATERIAL, EXAMPLE:

  • Use a cobalt drill bit when drilling into stainless steel materials.
  • Use a spear head drill bit when drilling into tiles and glass.
  • Use a spade drill bit  when drilling into wood
  • HSS (high speed steel) drill bits can be used in steel applications as well as hard wood. When drilling into softer wood, use a wood drill bits.
